What is Actinium-225 Therapy?
Actinium-225 therapy is an advanced form of targeted alpha therapy. It uses a radioactive isotope, Actinium-225, attached to a molecule that can recognize specific targets on cancer cells. After binding to the target, Actinium-225 releases high-energy alpha particles over a very short distance.
How Does It Work?
The principle is precision targeting. In prostate cancer, Actinium-225 may be linked to PSMA-targeting molecules. PSMA is commonly expressed on many prostate cancer cells. Before treatment, patients usually undergo PSMA PET/CT imaging to confirm sufficient target uptake.
Which Patients May Be Considered?
Actinium-225 therapy may be considered in selected patients with advanced or metastatic cancer, especially selected metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer cases, when standard treatment options have already been used or when the multidisciplinary team believes targeted alpha therapy may be appropriate.
